1926 Schela Mare Concordia fire - Well No. 305 CC SII Gura Ocnitei

At the midnight of 15 June 1926, after a torrential rain, two oil wells of Concordia Company, located in Schela Mare, Moreni were ignited by a lightning. One of them was oil well No. 305 CC SII Gura Ocnitei, in eruption at that time. The spud and production tests were finalized 20 days before and the well was put in production with 250 wagons of oil per day. Several extinguishing systems have been tried to put down the flames but they have not given the desired result and the decision to executed a tunnel under the supervision of engineer Igma has been taken. The plan was to dig a 60 meters tunnel in order to reach the well casing at 30 meteres deep. This situation lasted a week during which the column of fire at the wellhead reached heights of 30-40 meters. Due to the intensity of the fire, a fire broke out at a nearby large open pit and 1000 tons of oil burned. In the morning of 22 June the eruption suddenly stopped and also the fire. After 10 minutes, the well began to erupt again and the oil was once again gather and pomped to the tank farm by Internationala Company.
